Prestige Lecture: The Big Bang Machine |
|
This summer, following repairs, the start button for the biggest scientific experiment in the history of mankind will be pressed. Using the energy required to power Geneva, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will investigate many of the mysteries of the smallest things in nature by recreating the conditions immediately after the Big Bang. It may also reveal secrets that the Universe has hidden since the early stages of its birth.
On October 21st, Dr Pete Edwards will present our Prestige Lecture for 2009 on 'The Big Bang Machine'. During the afternoon Pete will present to students of 6th form colleges in the Tees Valley, and in the evening to CSI member organisations. To reserve your place, please visit our reservations system.
Pete is an experienced science communicator who co-ordinates the outreach programme of the Ogden Centre for Fundamental Physics at Durham University. The aim of the programme is to use the science that we do in the North East to engage and enthuse school children and the wider community and stimulate their interest.
Pete’s previous research interests included gamma ray astronomy and astroparticle physics. He toured the UK in 2006 delivering the Institute of Physics Schools’ Lecture ‘Gravity, Gas and Stardust’ and provides regular talks for the Science Events for Schools Programme of the Royal Institution. He presented at the Centre for Life on 10 March 2009 as pert of the BA National Science & Engineering Week 2009 .
